The Highlands are true Scotland for many people and the landscape more than lives up to its image on many a postcard. The variety of terrain is awesome, from ancient pine forests to huge mountains and tranquil, shimmering lochs.

Inverness is the capital of the Highlands and its own major urban centre, and is a great base from which you can explore more remote areas. You might what to travel to Cape Wrath in the north, which is the north-western tip of the mainland, whose sheer cliffs bear the brunt of Atlantic storms on regular occurrence. There’s Glen Coe in the south, which is home to beautiful vast expanses, the tranquil peninsula of Ardnamurchan in the west whose  'Road to the Isles' runs to Skye and beyond. Skye is one of the area’s most popular tourist spots and is renowned for its bizarre rock formations and the peaks of the Cuillins.
