Wonderful Scottish Whisky
Scotland is renowned for its whisky production and even the name of our national drink shows its iconic status. Coming from ‘uisge beatha’ (pronounced oosh-ga beh-huh) meaning Water of Life, a nip of whisky was believed to treat illnesses and prolong life. Whether for ‘medicinal purposes’, a life-long love of whisky or to discover this integral part of our Scottish heritage, a trip to Scotland would not be complete without a few drams.
Water is not only part of the name but an integral part of whisky creation. Distilling started as a way of making use of rain-soaked barley and now the crystal clear spring water that flows through Scotland’s luscious landscape is at the heart of our favourite tipple. Find out more about the whisky making process with a tour of a distillery such as Glenkinchie, just outside of Edinburgh, or Dalwhinnie in Inverness-shire.
Our whisky is split into five production regions, each with its own unique characteristics. From the light, mellow flavours of the Lowland malts to the distinctive peaty smokiness of Islay drams you will discover new flavours in every whisky you try.
Follow the malt Whisky Trail in Speyside, the only trail of its kind in the world. See some of our most famous whiskies being made, including The Glenlivet and Glendfiddich, and visit the only existing cooperage in the UK where you can see the ancient art of creating whisky barrels. Slainte mhath , as we say in Scotland!
