Tartan & kilts
One of Scotland’s most iconic items or creations is the kilt, which has become a symbol of Scottish culture. Almost as famous as the kilt is the distinctly patterned material used to create it - Tartan.
What is a kilt?
The kilt originated in the Highlands as an untailored, five meter-long piece of cloth that was belted at the waist. Over time, the design evolved to become more practical and the pleated, skirt-like garment that we know today was created in the mid 18th century. It grew in popularity after being chosen by Highland regiments serving with the British Army and it quickly became sought after south of the border as the British aristocracy considered all things Scottish a fashion statement.
Today the kilt is still worn at special occasions including weddings and for example at traditional Scottish ceilidh dances. Men also frequently choose to wear their clan tartan, giving them a sense of belonging which has passed through generations.

What is Tartan?
Tartan may now be colored using contemporary dyes rather than berries and plants, but it is still woven today using looms that are set-up by hand. Take a trip to the Clan Tartan Centre in Leith, Edinburgh, where you can search their database of 50,000 names and take a certificate showing your clan name away with you.
If you are looking for a specific color of tartan, you can search through the thousands of designs on the Scottish Register of Tartans’ online collection to find your perfect color combination and design. However, if you want a truly unique tartan to wear, you can create and register your own with the Scottish Register of Tartans - anyone can register a new tartan design, from kilt makers and designers to members of the public.
You can learn more about the cloth at the Tartan Weaving Mill on The Royal Mile near Edinburgh Castle. Experience the sights and sounds of tartan being made on the huge power looms before browsing the lengths of beautiful material created at the mill and the Highland dress in the mill shop. You can even dress up in traditional Scottish costume and have your photo taken for a fantastic memento of your trip to Scotland. Why not purchase a unique kilt designed at 21st Century Kilts to take home with you?
