Where Scotland begins
As you cross the border from England into the south of Scotland, you will notice a change in accent almost instantly, and not just in the friendly voices you will come across. Small shops and pubs are full of unique local produce, whisky and beers. Watch the scenery shift from the dales of northern England, past the landmark of the Cheviot Hill close to the border, and on towards the rolling hills of Scotland.
The Scottish Borders are full of character. Discover tales of the four Border abbeys and a heritage of textiles – there are some great bargains in quality tweeds and woollens in the mill shops! To the west, Galloway is another area with charm and personality. Little towns with colorful frontages along the main street, great gardens - thanks to the mild airs of the south-west - and all this before you discover Ayrshire. Here you can’t go far without encountering Scotland’s famous ploughman poet, Robert Burns, perhaps at his historic birthplace cottage at Alloway. Meanwhile, the golf courses along the Clyde coast are legendary.
