The bonnie, bonnie banks…and beyond
In many ways this breathtaking region epitomizes all of the very best that Scotland has to offer. Nestled between the mountainous grandeur of the Highlands and the gentler landscape of the Lowlands, this beautiful corner of Scotland has a little something for nature lovers, foodies, and history buffs alike.
Lovers of the outdoors can walk the West Highland Way – 95 miles of unspoiled scenery following those bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. Walking the distance will take you all the way up to Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis, the UK's highest mountain.
The pure waters of the western seaboard have their own riches - and freshly caught seafood at Loch Fyne Oyster Bar, near Inveraray, is the perfect way to satisfy those hunger pangs. Or enjoy a hearty welcome in Aulay's Bar in Oban, coupled with a warming dram of Oban whisky of course.
This area is also the seat of Scotland’s turbulent past – retrace the steps of some of Scotland’s historical heroes such as William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots, and Rob Roy. Stand on the very grounds where the Scots, led by Robert the Bruce, handed King Edward a resounding defeat at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
